(More customer reviews)I had the chance to handle this fine M-mount rangefinder camera portrait (short telephoto) lens at this year's Photo Plus East and came away quite impressed with it. It focuses nearly as quickly as my APO-Summicron-M lens, but, better yet, offers a level of a performance that is as good as, if not better, than Leica's top-of-the-line fast 90mm lens at a significant savings. I saw some superb demonstration photographs taken with this lens, including a fine black and white portrait that is notable for its rich tonality (vivid blacks and whites, with very high contrast). If there is only one negative feature that I don't like about the 90mm Summarit-M lens, then it is this: it lacks a built-in lens hood (The lens hood must be purchased separately too.). Those in search of a cheaper alternative to the 90mm APO-Summicron lens won't be disappointed at all.

Product Description:
The Summarit-M lenses are designed to offer traditional Leica optical and mechanical excellence while positioned at a price level below the current M ASPH lenses. The aim of these lenses is to bring classic Leica quality and performance to a broader market of users. The Summarit-M maximum aperture of f/2.5 and the concentration on classical and proven spherical lens designs leads to very compact, but high performance lenses with excellent quality expected from a Leica lens. The Summarit-M lenses will see the reemergence of traditional Leica elements. All letter and number engravings will be made using the traditional "Leitz-Norm" font as originally used by Leitz Wetzlar during the 1960's and the red button onthe lens mount will be true to the original color used on lenses produced since the introduction of the M mount through the 1970's.
